Seven In A Row? Are We Drinking the Kool Aid?

Well, we all may be drinking the Orange Kool-Aid, or we may be cautiously optimistic; however, the Baltimore Orioles are on a roll.

I posted this as a comment yesterday in response to Heather Irvin's thread on Oriole Magic, but I know better than to think the Orioles will contend in '08, much less will finish better than .500; however, what are seeing with Baltimore is what makes April a month where a team can either have a feast or go through famine like the powerful Tigers in Motown — it gives us fans hope.

In the end, Baltimore may come crashing down to earth this week, or next, but for once it was kind of nice to take a vacation from the negativity and whatever else.

The streak makes for great water cooler talk, and although the natural laws will finally descend on the Orioles — at least we have had some positivity in Bird-land, and it's not been around for a long time.
We still need our starters to go deeper, Hernandez may not be the real deal, and whatever other problems the O's have still need to be resolved, but things are a lot different from '07.

It's been an entertaining week, and as Heath (of Dempsey's Army) said, yesterday, "let's all enjoy the ride", because we will probably return to bitching and complaining soon enough.

Here are the highlights from yesterday:

Throwing One Under The Bus...

Over the past few days, a lot of people have reacted in let's say in a negative fashion -- especially on the internet and on sports talk radio -- as to what the Orioles are doing so far with the free agent market. Of course, the man at the top -- Andy MacPhail -- is getting the brunt of the criticism for being, um, "too slow".

With the exception of a few years, the notion of a "winning" Oriole team since 1990 has not existed and that's why a change was made in the middle of last season.

MacPhail was hired by Peter Angelos -- with a nudge from commissioner Bud Selig -- to try to restore the Baltimore franchise back to prominence. So far, I'd say he's done a decent job and of course his two most notable deals involved the trade of Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada in exchange for prospects and everyday major leaguers (Adam Jones, serviceable Luke Scott, George Sherrill).

Despite the changes to the roster and early success in 2008, the Orioles only ! finished with 68 wins. Considering how bad most though the team would be in the media, I thought things were going in right direction in light of the final six weeks.

However, after 11 losing seasons -- fans are restless -- especially with hometown players Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett on the market. Some fans want deals made (now) and the Orioles to be super aggressive although much very little has taken place in terms of transactions beside talk. Add to that, the situation with extensions for Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis, or not moving a few players -- you've got the seeds of discontent.

Whether or not we sign a marquee name or extended anyone, this much I am sure of -- MacPhail has a pretty good track record, and he should be given a chance to do his job. He's only been in town for about a year-and-half, and it's unrealistic despite signing Wieters along with the big names on the market for the team to improve -- especially being that the Oriol! es play in one of the toughest divisions in all of sports.

What has happened with the Baltimore Orioles over the past decade did not happen overnight -- it was a combination of bad drafts, limited player development, players not working out & bad free agent moves that have led to this state.

Honestly, it's not going to be fixed overnight, either. I expect at least two or three seasons to pass by before the team returns to respectability -- if we assume it all works out. If we get either Teixeira or any big name -- that's wonderful -- however, to build a consistent winner, spending on the market can help immensely, but you have to build an organization from the ground up.

Rebuilding is going to take time & a lot of patience, but at this point, do fans have it with the team and Andy MacPhail?

Kenshin Kawakami More Than Likely Headed To Atlanta

Oh well, getting one out of your two targeted Japanese pitchers isn't bad.

It looks Kenshin Kawakami -- a coveted pitcher that the Orioles wanted -- is going to Atlanta, a team in dire need of pitching.

Ah yes, the Orioles are in dire need of it as well.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other media outlets reported Saturday the Braves had reached a preliminary agreement with the 33-year-old right-hander. Cox said he couldn't confirm the deal, but said the team is interested.

"We've had some guys watch him the last couple of years, and they like him," Cox said.

ESPN Zone Event: Commemorating the 1989 'Why Not' Season

The 'Why Not' 1989 Season Celebration - ESPN Zone, Balto., Md.

Last night at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore's Inner Habor, Oriole fans! got to relive some of the magic of the incredible 1989 season! where a young team led by Hall of Famer Frank Robinson -- that finished 1988 with 107 losses and started the season 0-21 -- shocked all of baseball by contending in the American League East until the final weekend of the season.

Curt Schilling Calls it a Career in Baseball...

This morning, Curt Schilling announced his retirement on his blog, 38 Pitches. No matter what you thought of him as a pitcher, or much less a personality, he was one of the best ever to step on the mound -- especially in the postseason (most notably in 2004 and the "Bloody Sock" game...)

Though some debate his numbers for the Hall of Fame, Schilling is one in my eyes in how he dominated on the mound, and his exceptional playoff record.

Lest we O's fans forget, we traded him in the early 90's to Houston along with Steve Finley and Pete Harnisch for slugger Glenn Davis.

Boy, we know how that all worked out. Sheesh.

The Red Sox Can Comeback Too...

What a fun, draining and disappointing day. The Baltimore Orioles had the Red Sox where they wanted them -- down 5-1 in the top of the ninth inning; however, the Red Sox decided to flip the script and show that they could do a comeback as well.

Not only would the Orioles blow a four-run lead, thanks to four walks by the relief corps -- mainly, Jim Johnson and George Sherrill -- plus a two-run shot by Kevin Youkilis and giving up bases load single to ex-Ray Rocco Baldelli to the the game. The pesky Red Sox would decide the game in the 11th as Julio Lugo plated in the winning run off reliever Danys Baez, and they would steal one from the Orioles, 6-5.

Amazingly, Sherril struck out two Boston batters -- Jason Bay and David Ortiz -- for two outs in the frame; however, after giving up a single to Jacoby Ellsbury and a walk to Jeff Bailey, Jason Varitek earned a contoversial walk and then the flood! gates opened thanks to Baldelli's single.

Phillies Take Game One of NLCS

The Philadelphia Phillies took the first game of the NLCS over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-6, thanks to a big fifth inning, and two three-run homers by Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez.

The Dodgers were helped out by a huge Manny Ramirez home run in the fifth and rallied in the eighth inning to come within two; however, Brad Lidge – who everyone knows struggled in 2009 in save opportunities – was not perfect in the ninth inning on Thursday, but got the very important save.

Philadelphia's Cole Hamels got the win; however, he was far from good as he only 5 1/3 and gave up four runs on eight hits. Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw shined! for four innings, and then struggled mightily in the fifth inning and took the loss, only going 4 2/3 innings and allowing runs on four hits.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead off a solo homer by James Loney in the second inning; however, Kershaw lost his effectiveness in the fifth inning as he got a tad wild. He allowed two men to get on base, and then catcher Carlos Ruiz took him deep for a three-run homer to give Philadelphia a 3-1 lead.

Top UFA Defensemen Available This Summer

Ok - so maybe this is a little early to be doing. Most teams are still battling it out to secure a playoff spot and those that know they are heading to the postseason are trying to secure the best playoff seed possible. But, now that the NHL Trade Deadline has passed us by, the next most exciting date for hockey bloggers and hockey fans is July 1st (otherwise known as the day that free agency begins). Just like the way we looked at the top names who were likely to be traded leading up to the Trade Deadline, we're going to take a look at the top UFAs that will be available this summer, sorted by position.

Yesterday we took a look at the top UFA Wingers that are available this summer and on Wednesday we previewed the top UFA centers that will be available [Link]

Now we'll take a look at the top UFA Defensemen that will be available this summer. The amount of +'s or -'s next to each player indicates whether I think that the player's contract next season will be more or less than the current contract and by how much. If a player has one + or - next to his name then I think he's looking at a minor salary increase or decrease. Several +'s or -'s indicates that I think the player is looking at a significant increase/decrease. Also, I'm not taking into account that certain players will give a hometown discount, all salary expectations I'm indicating are if the player were to hit the open market. The list below is in the order of attention that I think that each player will be given, not necessarily in the order of best UFA available.

Jay Bouwme! ester - Florida - Salary 08/09 $4.88M, +++
Scott Niedermayer - Ducks - Salary 08/09 $6.75M, about the same or retire

NHL Vezina Nominees

According to NHL.com:
Steve Mason, the brilliant young goalie of the Columbus Blue Jackets, could become only the fifth NHL player to win the Vezina and Calder trophies in the same year.

But he'll have to beat out the Minnesota Wild's Niklas Backstrom, and Tim Thomas, whose league-leading goals-against average was a driving force for the Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins this season.

Mason could become only the fifth goalie to win the Calder and Vezina trophies in the same year, joining Ed Belfour, Tom Barrasso, Tony Esposito and Frankie Brimsek.

"I haven't had a whole lot of time to think about it," Mason said of being a Vezina finalist. "When you look back at the players who have done it, just to be nominated for one of these awards is a special honor. I'm just thinking about all the people who hel! ped me along the way, my family, the players this season, the coaching staff and Blue Jackets' management. Without that support, none of this would have been possible.

"I've never been to Las Vegas and I'm excited to go and see what it's all about," Mason said. "I'll be going with my family and my girlfriend and hoping we come away winners, not losers."

The three Vezina Trophy finalists finished 1-2-3 in lowest goals-against average. Thomas allowed a mere 2.10 goals per game, while Mason was next at 2.29 and Backstrom third at 2.33. The goalies will be on hand for the 2009 NHL Awards, which will be broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on June 18 on VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

Ed Belfour, breaking in with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1991, was the last rookie goalie to win the Vezina in the same year he won the Calder Trophy, which rewards the NHL rookie of the year. Buffalo Sabres goa! lie Tom Barrasso swept the awards in 1984.

Blackhaw! ks goali e Tony Esposito won both awards in 1970 and Frankie Brimsek, "Mr. Zero," won both for the Bruins in 1939.

The Vezina Trophy has been voted on by the NHL's general managers since 1981. Prior to that, it was awarded to the goalie(s) of the team that allowed the fewest goals in a season. The Montreal Canadiens donated the trophy in 1926, the year their former goaltender, Georges Vezina, died of tuberculosis, little more than a year after he collapsed during a game. Vezina had been the Canadiens only goalie from 1910-25 in both the NHL and its predecessor, the National Hockey Association. He won two Stanley Cups and allowed the fewest goals seven times.

Ironically, Vezina's successor, George Hainsworth won the Vezina in its first three seasons. Montreal's Bill Durnan and Philadelphia's Ron Hextall won the Vezina as rookies, but not the Calder.

Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante has won the most Vezina Trophies, seven, while Durnan and Buffalo Sabres goalie Dominic Hasek won six.

Rangers Trade Gomez to Montreal for Chris Higgins

According to Kevin Allen of USA Today:
Canadiens' Higgins just traded to the Rangers, details to follow shortly as I get them.

Here are Higgins' stats, he is a restricted free agent as of tomorrow.

Update @ 5:05PM

According to TSN:
The Montreal Canadiens have acquired centre Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins.
This is a big trade for the Rangers, it clears a whole lot of cap room off of the Rangers roster. It could make Sather a major player tomorrow for one of the higher priced UFAs. I just hope he doesn't make another stupid mistake.
I'm waiting to see if there is still more to this deal that hasn't been released yet because Montreal just took on a huge contract for a player that is set to become an RFA tomorrow. As a NYR fan I would've preferred to have dumped Drury or Redden's contracts, but this is a start. I wish Gomez the best, he's not a bad guy & I actually think he tried but just didn't have the wingers that he needed to play with.

Update 5:25PM:
James Mirtle now reporting the extra players involved, nothing major.

Trade is like so:
Gomez along with Tom Pyatt and Michael Busto for Higgins and defencemen Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik.

Blair Betts Heading to Philly

A couple of weeks ago we had the latest on Blair Betts and how he was basically sitting around waiting for teams to call him and offer him a contract.

According to both Jim Cerney and Ryan Bright, beat writers for the Rangers and the Flyers - Blair Betts has been invited by the Flyers to their training camp.

No doubt in my mind now that Betts will be a Flyer by the end of training camp. After watching him for the past few years as a Ranger, there is no way that he goes to a training camp and doesn't get offered a contract. He's one of the best penalty killers and shot-blocking forwards in the entire league. A solid addition for the Flyers for their fourth line.

Updated 2:45pm:
Looks li! ke Mark Bell, who the Rangers claimed off waivers from Toronto last season will also be heading to the Flyers' training camp.

Big names.

Liga Italia 2009/2010 | Harga Jovetic Melambung

Stefan Jovetic
Stefan Jovetic langsung meroket namanya setelah membawa Fiorentina menundukkan Liverpool.

England keeper to sign new contract at Spurs

Paul Robinson has revealed that he is expecting to sign his new improved contract at Tottenham Hotspur very soon.
The England goalkeeper has had a fantastic first season at the Lane and is committing his future to Spurs.

Robinson has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Barcelona, but in his column in the London Evening Standard, the shotstopper has claimed thay he has no interest in leaving Tottenham.
He wrote in the Standard: "Finally I have a message for Spurs fans. You may have seen speculation that I could be going this summer so I want to put the record straight. For the past three weeks I've been in negotiations with the chairman and I'm hoping to put pen to paper on a new deal very soon. I feel I've improved a lot as a goalkeeper since I came to the club and I've had a really good year. That ! means a lot to me and the people who really know me will tell you I'm not the type to ignore all of that and just wave goodbye."
This is great news not just to us Spurs fans, but to the management as we are building a team for the new future. Along with Robinson, Ledley King and Jermain Defoe have recently signed or are in the process of signing new contracts.
The future looks brilliantly white!

Spurs Officially Make The Highest Bid For The Beast

By ManicSpur
For THBN

It's official! We have made a 20.6 million Euro bid for Sevilla's top draw striker known to the La Liga viewers as 'The Beast'.

Sevilla president has told the press that Spurs have made the highest bid for the Brazilian.

It's weird that nothing has been posted on our official site to neither confirm nor deny this story. Read into that what you will.

So what do we know about the defensive midfielder that turned into an attacking midfielder before becoming a striker?

We can tell you that he scored 20 goals in 30 starts, made 11 assists in 35 games combined and is one of the most aggressive players you will find anywhere on earth.

Imagine the aggression and feistiness of Paul Dickov (sorry for using this example). Now, multiply that by 6 foot 3 inches. There you have it!

Why are we in for him? Why not? Everyone else is.

What will he offer our t! eam (if we actually do get him that is)? I am sure Martin Jol will use him in the midfield area. He is the attacking midfield player we have been crying out for. He is a box-to-box player that can score goals, is great in the air, is known to have the hardest shot in the world behind Adriano, and has an abundance of flair. Enough said?

If we get him, this does not mean that we will be selling any of our current strikers.

Keane had a blinder in today's 3-1 drubbing of Sundowns FC, with his attitude problems easing up a little. Kanoute will always score and create goals as long as he can apply himself properly, and I don't need to babble on about Mido or Defoe.

So, there you have it. Yet another rumour, but this time confirmed by the chairman of the club selling the player. I know that we shouldn't be too naive. Sevilla's president seems to like the sound of his own voice, and so could have bluffed Arsenal into making a bigger bid than our sup! posed offer.

I am sure that all will be explained t! his week .

PS. Do I think we'll get him? I'll have to say no.

What do you lot think?

A Step Too Far

Article Submitted by Michael Newley

The Sun newspaper was sent pictures of our striker, Dimitar Berbatov, signing a Manchester United shirt.

That for me, is the last straw! There is no excusing this blatant insulting behaviour. Even if the guy had told Dimi that he didn't have anything else for Berbatov to sign and that all he had was a United shirt, OUR player should have declined in signing another clubs' shirt, no matter what the circumstances surrounding that moment were.

I will be in The Shelf on Saturday, and if he plays, I will boo him. I've just about had enough of players not giving the slightest inkling into what we, the fans think!

To be fair, I really can't see him pulling on another Tottenham Hotspur shirt after this incident, and to be honest, I wouldn't want him to.

Good riddance Dimitar Berbatov!

North East FC

Tomorrow marks the eve of a troublesome Sunday, for one side in the North East, be it Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, or Hull, will be sucked into clutches of the Championship.

If this giant, and oh yes, Newcastle United FC is a giant, is dismissed from the Premier League, it will be catastrophic.

We have all been told that Newcastle won't be wearing the Leeds United shirt upon their exit, but just like the Damned United, Newcastle will be spinning crazily out of control.

When it comes to sellable assets, Newcastle also finish bottom of the league. With their majestic captain Owen, Viduka, and an abundance of other stars being out of contract within 60 days, the club loved by so many, may never return to the golden pebbled shores of the Premier League.

A rumour gathering pace in the North East is that another Spurs supporter, Sir Alan Michael Sugar, will take the reigns from his fellow Spurs compatrio! t, Ashley, if they are relegated. If this is to be the case, then I am sure Geordies will hail the Amstrad King as their new saviour, as his first task will be to steady the ship.

Looking back from his Tottenham days, I cannot see him flushing cash down the managers throat in a bid for instant success. Sir Alan has always taken projects by the scruff of the neck and slowly, but surely, turned them into precious gems.

What about Sunderland? I to can see them slipping into the abyss if relegated. For two seasons, they have splashed the cash on mediocre players; £7 million for McCartney, £8 million for Ferdinand and the list goes on and on.

Their reliance on the inexperienced time bomb, Roy Keane, has left them in the red, and with a dross of players, incapable of putting up a fight.

Niall Quinn may be the nicest bloke in football, but unfortunately nice doesn't win you games.

Just like Newcastle, I to fear for the lo! ng-term survival of Sunderland Athletic Football Club.
We now arrive at the doorsteps of both Middlesbrough and Hull. Both sides have young managers, and both sides are in trouble, but I foresee that their troubles are not as severe as Sunderland's or Newcastle's. Boro have players in which upon selling, will see them balance books.

Tuncay has been offered the captains role at former club, Fenerbahce, in a deal mooted to be in the region of £10 million.

Afonso Alves has an escape route at the ready with both PSV & Ajax ready to take the Brazilian off Boro's hands. Whether Middlesbrough can recoup the £12 million they forked out for him is another matter.

Downing, even with a broken foot and an expected lay off for the next 3 months, will command a transfer fee in the region of £8 to £10 million.

With the aforementioned players leaving Teesside, Boro have ready replacements in place. Their academy has an abundance of talent waiting in the wings. Players like Adam johnson is a ready-mad! e replacement for Downing, whilst other young talents await their chance to shine.

Let's not forget Mr. Gibson, a chairman that has seen the good, bad and even worse times while at the helm of his beloved Boro. His unparalleled trust in Gareth Southgate will see the side return to the Premier League if they are to go down.

What of Hull? Only a fair few people realise that they to are just within the borders of having the "North East" tag thrust upon them.

If they can keep a hold of players like Turner and Myhill, I too can see a safe passage back to the worlds finest league.

Unfortunately, out of the four clubs mentioned, I can see Newcastle slipping up with just a point at Villa.

Sir Alex has already reiterated that he will play his reserves against Hull, amid the wrath of Shearer & co.

The North East, so lovingly adorned in the past, is now as welcome as a mine field.

Ancelotti & Galliani Diskusikan Transfer Pirlo

Jika Chelsea nantinya bera! ni menyo dorkan dana yang diminta Milan, maka bukan tak mungkin Pirlo bakal berkostum The Blues musim depan. Pasalnya, kubu Rossoneri sendiri beberapa waktu lalu sempat mengatakan mereka tengah mencari alternatif pengganti Pirlo.

Munich Coba Curi Kaladze

Milito.
Pamor sebagai penguasa Serie A selama empat musim terakhir semakin membuat mereka tampak digdaya.

Laporta: Ronaldinho Pasti Temukan Lagi Daya Magisnya

Leonardo Ancam Tinggalkan Milan Selamanya

Rafa's Reds hitting the target

Liverpool have seen plnety of goals go in at either end of the field as they have racked up 15 Premier League goals and condeded nine in just six games.

Benitez's side have battled to two 3-2 away wins against Bolton and West Ham respectively, sparking criticism of their defensive abilities.

Despite the defensive mishaps, Liverpool look sharp at the other end but Benitez insists nothing has changed except their shooting accuracy.

Similar
Benitez said: "It is similar to last season - we are creating more or less the same situations but now we are scoring more goals because the accuracy is better," said Benitez.

"It is true we score a lot of goals. It's funny because people were talking before about us needing to score more goals because we were good in defence.

"Now they are saying we are scoring goals but conceding goals - so we can never win.

"Maybe it is because we are more offensive - but it is not bec! ause we are changing the system."

New full-back Glen Johnson has added extra threat to the Red's attack but question marks remain about his defensive qualities, but Benitez insists his side is generally attack-minded.

"Glen Johnson likes to go forward all the time," he said. "Alvaro Arbeloa defended a bit better so he had more balance," Benitez said.

"Yossi Benayoun, Dirk Kuyt, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are all going forward, maybe it is more than last year but they have confidence and are playing well.

"We have been trying to do the same things as last year - the difference is the players have more confidence going forward as we have more people comfortable with the ball.

"It is not because we are playing higher or changing the system."

Stature
Benitez also feels the players have grown in stature after running United close in the title race last season and will use the experience to spur ! them on to better feats.

"It was very important for! us. We won a lot of games in a row at the end of the season because we had a lot of confidence and we wanted to be as close to them as possible," he explained.

"You can take it as a positive because we were so close.

"This season it has almost been a problem because from the first day people were expecting us to win and score five goals in every game.

"Now, despite not starting well, we are in a good position and everyone has more confidence to play better.

"We know the teams at the top of the table will not make too many mistakes so we have to keep winning games."

Fulham Sering Merepotkan The Gunners

Ditambah lagi Arsenal mendapatkan berita baik setelah Theo Walcott dikabarkan siap merumput lagi setelah sembuh dari cedera punggung sejak mewakili tim Inggris U-21.

Apakah The Cottagers mampu mengulangi sukses mereka seperti mu! sim lalu? Ataukah The Young Gunners siap mempermalukan The Cot! tagers d ihadapan pendukung sendiri dan kembali masuk ke jajaran 4 besar Barclays Premier League?

SPAZIOMERCATO:INTER SU DAVID VILLA

Calderon e Mijatovic ci stanno pensando seriamente. Moratti anche

AMAURI-IAQUINTA,I GEMELLI DEL GOL

Con loro, una stagione sta per tramontare. A Dortmund, già l'imbrunire.

Pepe 6,5 Tanta corsa, grande resistenza, qualche pasticcio.

Il ko all'Olimpico col Cluj all'andata aprì la crisi in casa Roma.

I dubbi intorno all'impiego del montenegrino verranno sciolti soltanto all'ultimo.

ASSENZE PESANTI - Chi sta peggio? Elementare, i viola.

CR9 RISPONDE A IBRA E MESSI:5-0 ALLO XEREZ

Mourinho & company siete avvisati...
